This two-day course run by SpanSet, is designed to provide participants with the skills needed to conduct both safe lifting operations and formal inspection of lifting equipment and accessories.

The course takes attendees through three main elements of Slinging and Lifting, Safety and inspection, comprising:

  • Safe Slinging and Lifting Appreciation 
  • Practical Slinging and Lifting Beneath the Hook
  • Lifting Equipment Inspection & Record Keeping

Certification

On successful completion candidates will receive a certificate valid for three years. 

NB: All delegates must be 18 years or over and able to certify that they are physically fit and have no medical conditions that might prevent them carrying out lifting techniques.

Day 1 - Morning Session:  Safe Slinging & Lifting Appreciation
 

TRAINING AIMS

The course is designed to provide:-

  • An understanding of the theory and rating of lifting equipment.
  • An overview of the legislation as applied to the user.
  • An appreciation of types of lifting equipment and how to carry out routine pre-use inspections

COURSE CONTENT

The following topics will be covered:

  • All legislation appropriate to conducting lifting activities – Health and Safety at  Work Act 1974, LOLER 1998, PUWER and LEEA code of practice.
  • Planning of a lifting operation including assessing the load, correct equipment  selection and assessing the environment.
  • Safe and correct use of common lifting accessories (slings, shackles, chain slings, wire rope slings, plate clamps, eyebolts, hooks)
  • Pre use inspection of common lifting accessories.

Day 1 - Afternoon Session: Practical Lifting and Slinging Beneath the Hook

TRAINING AIMS

The session is designed to provide:-

  • Practical experience and understanding of the use of lifting equipment
  • An understanding of correct equipment selection
  • Assessment of loads in relation to weight, balance and safety

OVERVIEW

  • The course is designed for those who intend to conduct safe practical lifting operations and managers who need to plan lifting operations
  • During the training course delegates will be expected to carry out lifting operations. This will provide an insight into the delegates’ ability to operate in such conditions
  • This is only an indication of their capability, as it is not possible to recreate exact working conditions.

COURSE SYLLABUS

The following topics will be covered:

  • Assessment of loads incorporating weight, centre of gravity and any safety hazards.
  • Practical pre use inspection of equipment
  • Practical selection and use of suitable common lifting accessories (slings, shackles, chain slings, wire rope slings, plate clamps, eyebolts, hooks)
  • Personal safety whilst lifting
  • Potential misuse of equipment
  • Completing a lifting plan.

Day 2  - Lifting Equipment Inspection & Record Keeping

TRAINING AIMS

The course is designed to provide:-

  • More advanced training for those responsible for the detailed periodic inspections of lifting equipment.
  • The trainees will set up a recording system for the equipment and carry out periodic inspections throughout the life of a number of items of equipment.
  • The course will also demonstrate some strengths and weaknesses of materials by way of destruction tests.

OVERVIEW

  • This course is designed to provide greater detail on the inspection of lifting equipment & accessories.
  • This course provides the knowledge to allow delegates to plan and conduct lifting operations and formally inspect their equipment.
  • This course provides statutory requirements for inspection, rejection, disposal and reporting procedures for lifting equipment.

In addition to the theory elements of Safe Lifting Module 1 the following topics will be emphasised.

  • The importance of trace-ability for all lifting equipment.
  • Completing inspection records.
  • Inspecting equipment and recording the findings.
  • Monitoring the continual degradation of items of equipment and assessing the point at which to withdraw items from service.
  • Processes for quarantining equipment.
  • Processes for investigating the effects of contaminants and the details required for returning to service.

Practical

  • Legislation governing the inspection of lifting equipment.
  • The requirements and production of an inspection report.
  • Standards and ratings of lifting equipment
  • Maintenance of lifting accessories
  • Conducting formal examinations under LOLER on common lifting accessories (slings, shackles, chain slings, wire rope slings, beam clamps, eyebolts, hooks)
  • Common faults with equipment
  • Follow up procedures after an examination
